Editorial Advisory Committee - Carleton Now

Terms of Reference

The purpose of the Editorial Advisory Committee is to provide advice and assistance to the editor of Carleton Now. Final decisions regarding content, design, and production are made by the editor, under the direction of the Manager of Public Affairs. Members of the committee are asked to:

  • keep the editor informed of any news from his or her respective division of the University regarding key messages and themes, new initiatives, new programs, major staffing developments, research projects, special events, or the like;
  • contribute story ideas and possible sources for future publications;
  • recommend topics for discussion in viewpoint articles, and potential contributors of such articles, and;
  • help ensure the paper is achieving its goals and actively addresses the needs of its audience.

Composition, operation and structure

The committee will meet a minimum of five times per year to exchange ideas and offer recommendations and advice to the editor, and will maintain active lines of communication throughout the year. All proceedings of committee meetings are considered confidential, unless otherwise stated.

The committee will be composed of representatives from key readership groups (faculty, staff, students and retirees), including:

  • A minimum of six members-at-large from the Carleton community, including one (1) retiree; one (1) student; two (2) faculty members (preferable one from the School of Journalism); and two (2) staff members for two-year terms
  • A minimum of one member of the Board of Governors
  • The editor of Carleton Now;
  • The Manager, Public Affairs, Department of University Communications;
  • The editor of Carleton University Magazine;
  • The graphic designer, Carleton Now
  • The university communication officers

Recruitment and selection

The members will be recruited via a call for nominations in Carleton Now and Today@Carleton, the university’s daily e-newsletter, and will be appointed by the editor of Carleton Now in consultation with the Manager, Public Affairs. Member terms begin and end in July.
